[edit] LilyPond FAQ from Users mailing list

Please take a look to the Official FAQ list page first. If you cannot find an answer there, look here.

These questions appear more or less frequently in the LilyPond users list. It has been said that if the documentation does not explain something well, we should change the documentation first. That is true, but in the meantime, this page can be of help to new users.

  • Q: I'm a Linux user. How do I upgrade my installed version to the latest release?
  • Q: I'm a Mac user. How do I use LilyPond?
    • A: See the page for Mac.
  • Q: Why do accented or special characters in lyrics appear strange or do not appear at all in the PDF?
    • A: LilyPond only understands these characters when they use UTF-8 encoding. All recent editors can save in this encoding, so search for this option in your editor's preferences. Read more...
  • Q: Have I installed the program? I double-click the icon and cannot get into the program.
    • A: LilyPond is a compiler, not a visual editor. It uses a text-based interface. For more information, read the tutorial or read "Where is the app?" in this wiki.
  • Q: I use Windows Vista and LilyPond is very slow. What is going on?
    • A: After a fresh install of LilyPond, the first time running the program is always slow because it has to prepare a font cache. On Windows Vista, however, it could continue being slow. Believe it or not, this has to do with the daylight saving settings of the system clock and the timestamp of the font cache. The problem seems to have been corrected for version 2.11.64 and all later versions of LilyPond.
